Finding somewhere to stay

 

If you’re homeless and looking for a place to stay you can contact Action Homeless for help by calling 0116 25511855 or 016 2211856. You can also email us at info@actionhomeless.org.uk. You need to know that if we can’t help you ourselves we will work hard to find someone who can.

 

Leicester’s Outreach Service also provides advice and assistance to help rough sleepers and homeless people find suitable hostel accommodation.  The Outreach Service is based at the Dawn Centre on Conduit Street, just around the corner from the train station.

Checking out your health

 

There is a specialist GP and healthcare service for homeless people in Leicester.  It’s based at the Dawn Centre on Conduit Street, just around the corner from the train station. 

You can call into the service Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 12pm and from 1pm to 4.30pm, except on Thursday when the service is only open from 8.30am to 12pm.

Getting advice and support

 

As well as Action Homeless, there are a number of other organisations in Leicester who offer advice to people who are homeless or worried about homelessness. 

 

The Y Advice and Support Centre (YASC)

 

The Y Advice and Support Centre (YASC) is based at the Dawn Centre on Conduit Street, just around the corner from the train station.  If you’re homeless or sleeping rough, staff at YASC will be able to give you advice on issues like emergency accommodation, claiming benefits, applying for council and housing association accommodation or getting help with drugs and alcohol issues.

YASC is open from 8am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm and you don’t need an appointment to attend.

The Housing Options Centre at Leicester City Council

 

The Housing Options Centre at Leicester City Council provides help and advice with housing issues, such as finding somewhere to live, understanding your legal rights, housing benefits and council houses.   Housing Options is based at Phoenix House, 1 King Street, Leicester LE1 6RN.

The Centre is open from 9am to 4pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and from 1pm to 4pm on Tuesday.

The Shelter Housing Aid and Research Project (SHARP)

 

The Shelter Housing Aid and Research Project (SHARP) provides independent help and advice for anyone who is homeless or vulnerably housed.  The service is free and confidential and offers help with any type of housing problem.  You will find SHARP at 13 Welford Road, Leicester, LE2 7AD.

STAR at Leicester City Council

 

STAR is a community based service, for people who live in Leicester and have housing related needs.  STAR can give you information and support on a range of housing related issues including: advice if you are at risk of losing your home, help with money problems e.g. low level debt and benefits, support with setting up a new home and help in finding education, training and a job. 

STAR has offices throughout the city.  Take a look at the STAR web site to find your nearest STAR office.

 

Day centres

 

The Y Advice and Support Centre (YASC) is a day centre for anyone who is homeless, sleeping rough, staying in temporary accommodation or vulnerably housed.  YASC provides showers, washing and laundry facilities as well as access to a toilet, a change of clothes and food and drink.  YASC is open from 8am to 12noon and from 1pm to 4pm.  A free breakfast is provided between 8am and 9am. YASC is based at the Dawn Centre on Conduit Street, just around the corner from the train station. 

You can just drop in as you don’t need an appointment to attend.  You can also contact them by phone on 0116 221 2787.

The Anchor Centre provides day support for people who are homeless.  It is different from other services in that it allows people to drink alcohol inside the building.   Access is available to the centre for drinkers only.  Clients generally self-refer.  However, places must be booked in advance.  All clients will need to have an assessment carried out. 

The centre is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and you can contact them by phone on 0116 255 1608.
