27 new bed spaces opened for people experiencing homelessness this winter
This week, we’ve opened a new project with 27 bed spaces which will mean people don’t have to sleep rough this winter.
Those accessing the accommodation will also get support to find a more permanent home during their stay. The project comprises of 27 individual rooms with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and is centrally located in Leicester. Each person will be given a warm welcome and provided with the essentials that they need to keep safe and well. All residents will also be able to access a range of activities and events at our Community Lounge to help them feel connected during the festive season and beyond.
The new winter beds have been made possible with funding from Leicester City Council. In November 2022, Leicester City Council declared a ‘Housing Crisis’ in the city and the numbers of individuals and families seeking support with homelessness continues to rise. Action Homeless’ project is one of a range of measures which are being taken to reduce rough sleeping and ensure safe places for people affected by homelessness to stay.
Mark Grant, Action Homeless Chief Executive, said
‘Homelessness is devastating at any time of year but during the winter months, rough sleeping can become extremely dangerous. In some cases, it is life threatening. With demand for temporary accommodation vastly outstripping supply, we’re pleased to open this project which is part of collaborative efforts from partners across the city to ensure that no one needs to sleep on the streets of Leicester this Winter.’
The winter beds project is open to referrals from this week. Those seeking accommodation should contact Leicester City Council’s Housing Options (0116 454 1008) in the first instance for more information and help. Enquiries can also be made via the Action Homeless Duty Desk (0116 2211857) which is open Monday-Friday from 9.30am-4.30pm.
