New project opens for Armed Forces Veterans
This week, Action Homeless is opened a new project which will provide veterans experiencing homelessness with high quality housing, support and opportunities to build connections with the community in Leicester.
The housing project – ‘Helping Veterans Towards Home’ – will provide six freshly renovated living spaces to Veterans without a home. The property, owned by Action Homeless, has been completely refurbished with a grant from The Armed Forces Covenant Trust, thanks to the Office for Veterans’ Affairs’ Veterans’ Capital Housing Fund. As well as bedrooms which offer peace and privacy, Veterans will be able to access a shared lounge, kitchen-diner and courtyard garden. It is located in a quiet residential area of Leicester, close to the city centre and its amenities.
Veterans will be supported to find a more permanent home and build connections with the local community. They will receive help to explore their housing options, address any health concerns and rebuild their confidence and wellbeing.
Action Homeless Chief Executive, Mark Grant, said;
We’re privileged to be opening this new project specifically designed to support those who have served in the armed forces and find themselves without a safe place to live.
The housing will mean Veterans have some stability and support to enable them to find a more permanent home. The whole project has been designed with Veteran’s needs in mind and we’re very grateful to our funders, The Armed Forces Covenant Trust, for making it possible.
The project will welcome it’s first residents next week, with support staff on hand to help them settle in and get acquainted with their new home and the surrounding area. It is hoped that being placed in accommodation specifically for Veterans, will aid resident’s recovery from homelessness and enable them to build connections and rediscover a sense of comradery with those who have had similar life experiences.
An official opening event will take place later this Summer.
