Home Essentials Hub Series: Jason
The Home Essentials Hub has been launched in Leicester to help those who are moving into their own home after a period of homelessness, providing people with everything they need to set up a home including white goods, furniture and flooring. This is an exciting new partnership initiative led by local Leicester charities Open Hands, Action Homeless and One Roof Leicester. It is supported by Leicester’s Homelessness Charter and funded by Leicester City Council and the National Lottery Awards for All.
You can find more information on the project here.
This series of case studies shares the stories of people who have benefitted from the support of the Home Essentials Hub.
Jason has been living in temporary accommodation for many years. He had lived at home but moved out due to a family breakdown and subsequently experienced issues with addiction. Before coming into Action Homeless services, Jason spent a period of time sleeping rough. His time on the street significantly worsened his substance use and mental health, leaving him isolated and without the stability he needed to begin rebuilding his life.
When he arrived at Action Homeless, our team, along with partner agencies such as Turning Point, worked closely with him to address his addiction and support his rehabilitation. Through consistent guidance, encouragement, and access to the right interventions, Jason was able to regain a sense of normality and begin developing healthier coping strategies. Jason was provided with stable, supportive and secure accommodation, enabling him to work through a range of challenges in a safe environment. Our expert and compassionate staff helped him to build confidence, make positive choices, and re-engage with activities that improved his wellbeing.
Jason was very active and often used his bus pass to travel around Leicester to maintain important connections with his family and friends. He was also a regular visitor to the Action Homeless Community Lounge. After many years of consistent support, Jason reached a point where he felt ready to move forward to the next stage of independence.
“The Home Essentials Hub has made such a difference. For the first time in years I feel happy in my own space. My room is so much comfier than anything I’ve had for a long while, and it really feels like somewhere I can settle and call home.”
The Home Essentials Hub played a key role in this transition, giving him the freedom to choose some furnishing items for his new accommodation. This allowed him to create a home that felt comfortable, personal, and reflective of his progress. Having a space, which he could truly be proud of, has been transformative for Jason. It not only reinforced his confidence but also increases the likelihood that he will be able to sustain his accommodation long-term — something he has struggled with in the past. A stable home environment offers him a crucial foundation to maintain his wellbeing, continue his recovery, and ultimately break the cycle of homelessness for good.
