Home Essentials Hub Series: Jon
The Home Essentials Hub has been launched in Leicester to help those who are moving into their own home after a period of homelessness, providing people with everything they need to set up a home including white goods, furniture and flooring. This is an exciting new partnership initiative led by local Leicester charities Open Hands, Action Homeless and One Roof Leicester. It is supported by Leicester’s Homelessness Charter and funded by Leicester City Council and the National Lottery Awards for All.

This series of case studies shares the stories of people who have benefitted from the support of the Home Essentials Hub.
Jon came to Action Homeless in 2025 following a family bereavement which caused some mental health issues. For many years he had been lovingly caring for his mother who was seriously ill. When she died, he was left without a job or house. Jon was living in his car before spending some time at the Dawn Centre and finally moved to The Hollies.
Jon immediately engaged well at the Hollies and fitted in straight away, enjoying the beautiful garden and opportunities available, including football. Through this, Jon quickly became ready to move on from Action Homeless.
To keep himself busy and get back to his normal life, Jon spent much of his time at the gym, a long-term passion of his. At Action Homeless, he also developed a new passion, in gardening. He was able to spend time outside and help contribute to and be proud of his home.
From this Jon began working with Action Trust, Action Homeless’ gardening and cleaning social enterprise business, which prepares individuals who’ve experienced homelessness to get back into work and gives them invaluable skills and experience.
Jon moved on with help from the Home Essentials Hub which provided him with everything he would need to make his new council property a home. Thanks to the Home Essentials Hub, a property which began as a shell, devoid of all basic appliances and furniture, quickly became a home. Jon moved into a home, not just a flat, and it gave him immediate independence and comfort, providing a strong base for a more stable life.

Jon is now living happily in his property continuing with the gym and really enjoying decorating his new place. Thanks to the Home Essentials Hub he has a stable base in which to build upon and progress.
