Moving on to more permanent accommodation through personalised support
Omar came to Leicester after having to leave his home country as it was no longer safe for him to stay there. As soon as he was given settled status to remain in the UK, he had to leave the accommodation he had been staying in, and had nowhere else to go. After some time spent rough sleeping, he was offered temporary accommodation with Action Homeless. With help from his Support Worker, Omar started to open up to the team as he became more familiar with them and built up trust. He had recently lost his father and several other family members in a short space of time just before arriving at Action Homeless, and this had been very difficult for him and his mental health had suffered as a result.
Omar was encouraged to see his GP and talk to them about his mental health and how he was struggling with the impact of losing family members. He was offered support and also put on some medication to help with his low mood. Omar’s goal was to find a settled home for him and his new wife, and also to secure a job to support his family.
With encouragement from his Support Worker, he started college and took English lessons to help with this, and to develop the skills he would need for his future. Omar was soon offered more permanent accommodation in Leicester. His Support Worker was able to help him with grants to get essential household items such as a bed and carpets, as Omar had very few possessions of his own and would not have otherwise been able to afford the items needed to move in.
Soon after moving into his new home, Omar found a full time job. His wife is also now looking for work, and they both came back to visit the team Action Homeless to show them photos of how they had made their home a cosy and welcoming environment. Through dedicated and personalised support from Action Homeless, as well as Omar’s own determination, he is feeling positive for the future. His mental health has improved, and he is grateful for the support that was provided by the team at Action Homeless when he needed it.
