SAMIR*

Working together with the local community to provide timely support

Samir came to Leicester after having to leave his home country as it was no longer safe for him to stay there, and became separated from his wife and children. As soon as he was given settled status to remain in the UK, he had to leave the accommodation he had been staying in, with nowhere else to go.

This resulted in him spending some rough sleeping, where he came into contact with the outreach team from the Leicester Tiger’s Foundation and One Call, That’s All. One Call, That’s All is an innovative pilot project designed by Utilita Giving to support people out of fuel and food poverty with compassion, dignity and long-lasting impact.

Both Action Homeless and the Leicester Tiger’s Foundation are part of the One Call, That’s All project, and by working in partnership and sharing knowledge they were able to refer Samir to the most appropriate support for his needs. This joint working meant that Samir was able to receive prompt and timely support to address their homelessness. Samir was given keys to his new accommodation on the same day that he was assessed, and was able to move into safe and secure temporary accommodation within Action Homeless that evening.

Samir was assigned a key worker who was able to support him in applying for necessary benefits that he was entitled to such as Housing Benefit. He also met with our Resettlement Team for an enrolment session, and has worked with his key worker to create a personalised Housing Action Plan to support him to access more stable and permanent accommodation in the long term. Since living with Action Homeless, Samir has started an ESOL course to improve his English, and is looking to find volunteering opportunities to improve his skills for the future.
