A New Home in time for Christmas
Homeless charity’s effort to open extra beds in time for Christmas
It’s all hands on deck at local charity, Action Homeless, as they open a new property today which will offer 8 beds to people experiencing homelessness in the city just in time for Christmas.
The house which will provide a safe haven to people who have been rough sleeping will be occupied from Monday 23rd December. Each of the residents will have their own furnished room and access to shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Project staff will be based onsite to support residents to find more permanent accommodation and to assist with their practical needs.
The team at Action Homeless have worked hard to ensure that rooms are ready by adding some homely touches, making up beds and putting together essential toiletry and food items. Thanks to donations from members of the public, everyone moving in will also be welcomed with some festive treats.
Mark Grant, Action Homeless Chief Executive, said ‘We’ve put all our efforts into getting these beds open. No-one wants to be on the streets at any time of year but at Christmas time, when it’s cold and the rest of society is celebrating, it is an even bleaker experience. We are looking forward to welcoming our residents on Monday and our staff will be on hand to make sure that they have everything that they need to make their stay a comfortable one.’
The new project is part of a city-wide effort to ensure that no one has to sleep on the streets of Leicester and has been made possible thanks to partnership working between Action Homeless and Leicester City Council.
